The Mill

Florence, Italy

This is a story of sunlight and water, warmth and flow

The fabric mill...

...we partner with is set into the mountains of Italy. Flying over the Tuscan hills to visit and discuss new weaves, I catch the glint of sun on the solar panels covering the mill's roof. I love how the spirit of Italian sunshine is infused in the cloth we use.

Like our Polish workshop, the mill is a family-run, multi-generational business

Skilled craftspeople using traditional machines with deep respect. It's no surprise that some machines have been in use for decades.

Walking through we pass a woman running the spooling process entirely solo and then the most complex loom operated by a man who has been there since he was a young adult. Everything is done with patience and pride.

Lunch happens in a converted spool factory - fresh pasta, salads, cakes, all shared by the different workshops. Simple but exceptional. Lots of tables sharing wine on a Wednesday lunchtime. Sunshine.

The dye house...

...which also uses traditional techniques, is a short drive away. The mill's owner, Massimo, takes us for a gelato on route. The dye house is set by a river and the dyeing process uses fresh flowing water, another heritage technique.

From the mill to you
