Vibrant velvets

Velvet gives colour somewhere to go. Light can catch in the pile and deep shadows show off form. The same piece can feel bright and midday and moody by evening.

For those of us drawn to saturated colour, velvets hold pigment just right. Greens take on a botanical intensity. Blues are inky depths. Pinks give a sunset glow.

Outlining with colour

Artists have always used colour to define shape. Consider a bold outline around a figure or a bright edge that pulls the subject forward.

Contrast piping takes that idea and uses colour to add dimension. A peony pink line around a neutral sofa and suddenly its form is sharper, the edges more pronounced, the whole pieces more alive.
