As our colour of the month is Red, what better way then enjoying the atmosphere at the Chilli Feista hosted every year at the West Dean Gardens near Chichester. This hot hot hot event is a specular way to enjoy the freshness of different chilli's, along with tasting fabulous inventive dips and sauces whilst watching cooking demonstrations and live music!

Throughout the week I had been keeping up to date with all the event information from the West Dean Twitter account, it looked as if this year’s event was going to be a cracker! The most recent addition was the camping aspect, where families could stay overnight in the field next to the event. I thought this was a great idea as many people could then enjoy a drink or two and not worry about the journey home. Plus, camping around the West dean gardens will always be a special experience as they are truly stunning!

I arrived at 11 am and already there was a crowd of people queuing up for tickets, baring in mind the event had only been open for 30 minutes, I couldn't quite believe it! Once we got in, the buzz had electrified throughout the crowd, who were all moving about trying different foods with an odd child telling their parents off for letting them taste an extremely hot chilli. There was an array of various chilli food stalls, ranging from dips, to oils, to sauces, to chocolate and even chilli candyfloss! Through the hustle and bustle of the crowds I managed to work my way through the stalls, grabbing a small piece of cracker or bread and trying the very interesting and of course, extremely hot condiments! Wow, I certainly had a good mixture of some incredibly weird and wonderful sauces. One of the strangest yet exotic sauces was a vodka cranberry and chilli sauce, it was incredibly sweet yet the impact of the chilli left my mouth tingling with excitement.

Through the distance I could hear music coming from a stage and to my right there was a huge tent with decking underneath where people could sit and enjoy the live music. All around the tent were fabulous little fresh hot food stalls serving different cultural cuisine. Knowing me, I had to have a walk around the whole area to weigh up the food competition. Should I go for the Vietnamese chilli pork and noodles? Or should I go for a Pad Thai..oh maybe the spicy chilli ostrich burger would be a good idea? There were tons to choose from, but I couldn’t resist some Pad Thai with fresh sweet chilli sauce on top. There was food for everyone, even for people suffering with Gluten intolerance, which is great! The fiesta really catered for everyone’s needs!

The live music ran throughout the whole day, with many bars offering fresh cold drinks from soft to alcoholic and also coffee and cake. There was fun for the kids with a Punch and Judy act and also outdoor beanbags to have a sit on. There was also a live dance salsa session in the afternoon for everyone to join in! Unfortunately I wasn't able to see that or the live cooking performances, which was a shame, yet there is always next year!

Not only were the stalls and the atmosphere great, but also the volunteers who were incredibly helpful with vital information to make sure everyone knew where they were going. If you want to chill and relax throughout the day you could easily take a stroll through the beautiful gardens themselves and relax in the open space as you watch the wonders of the event unfold.

I thoroughly enjoyed the event and will definitely be going back next year! If you too, fancy the idea of the Fiesta, pop on your sombrero and save the dates in your calendar for the 8th, 9th and 10th of August. Check out our Colour Of The Month’ Pinterest board with fabulous photos of the event.
