Book Review Before I Go To Sleep

At Love Your Home For Less we have decided that the colour of the month is going to be red. Why red you ask? It’s passionate, dangerous, thrilling, vibrant and stands out. Just like us. So, to coincide with our passion for red, we decided to find the most compelling and thrilling novels that really keep us on our toes when we read them. With red you think of blood and you think of danger, so when choosing a book that would represent these fears and feelings I had no hesitations.

Published in January 2012, Before I Go To Sleep by S.J Watson is one of the most unforgettable, mesmerizing and gripping novels I have ever read. This book is so compelling that I finished it within two days. Yes, it really is that good!

From the very first page you are instantly placed in the life of Christine, a woman who cannot remember her name, her identity and even her past every time she wakes up. She starts every day like it is her first day on earth. To imagine being in her position is almost unbearable. However, Christine is not living alone. Her husband Ben tells her everyday the same story about who she is and why she ended up like this. But when Christine hits that pillow and falls asleep, she awakes the next day and her memory is wiped. So Christine starts to write a diary, she writes down everything that she is getting told by her husband Ben, and she starts to see a psychiatrist who also tries to help her restore her memory.

Then it happens, she awakes one day, finds her diary and starts to read it. Her memory starts to come back in flashes, but the most disturbing sentence she sees is one she will never forget.

‘Don’t Trust Ben.’

Shocked, scared and speechless Christine can’t believe she has written a warning to herself.. Ben is her husband, isn’t he?

Before I go To Sleep really captures the terrifying concept of people who lose their memory. Memories are what define us as individuals. Who are we without memories? People will just be people to us rather then family, or relations. This thrilling novel will send chills down your spine as you explore Christine’s everyday battle and how the people who say will help her, turn out to be her worst enemies.

The two days I spent reading this I was constantly trying to figure out what was happening to Christine and how she really ended up like this. This book will entice you into Christine’s world and soon you will be piecing together the memories, just like Christine does.  For a thrilling, dramatic and climatic read this book is definitely the one!
